《法學經典著作選讀》著眼于西方法律思想史上自古希臘至近代對法律思想發展具有重大影響的思想家的經典作品，以法學理論的基本問題為主線，選取具有思想性、為后世所推崇且為學術界反復征引的作品之片段，力圖展現這些思想家具有代表性的法律思想。每章篇首附以作者和所選作品的簡介，對于一些經典著作的譯本，除了本書選取的譯本外，還指出了相應的現代譯本信息。所選文本一般具有內在的連續性，自成體系。根據所選內容的邏輯性和結構特征，或直接引用原文標題，或由編者擬定若于標題，以體現所選文本的層次性和重點，便于讀者掌握其中的思想脈絡。由于經典著作的特點，歷史上各種版本和譯本層出不窮，往往良莠不齊，故經典著作的選編，版本至關重要。本書所選版本皆為歷史上的善本，譯本也都是歷史上久為稱道的優秀譯本，版本和譯本都在每章篇尾指明具體出處，便于讀者搜尋原文進一步閱讀。本書附錄選編部分中國古代具有深刻法律思想的名篇作為補充，一方面擴展法律思想的領域，體現中國特色；另一方面也起到對比參照的作用，可以啟發讀者立足國情，關注現實，深入思考，形成自己的法律思維。
